1683 Large Antique Holy Bible with Apocrypha – Cambridge King James Bible - Ref x791

An impressive large-format 17th-century holy bible, printed at cambridge in 1683 by john hayes, printer to the university.the finely engraved architectural title page reads:“the holy bible, containing the old testament and the new… cambridge, printed by john hayes printer to the university, 1683.”this early king james / authorized version bible contains the old testament, the apocrypha, and new testament, together with marginal references and the traditional translators’ dedication to king james.one of the most striking features is the original-style dark leather binding. the large spine is divided by raised bands into decorative compartments containing elaborate gilt tooling, much of which remains visible despite centuries of wear. the boards also retain traces of their original decoration.at approximately 23.5 cm tall, 19 cm wide and 8 cm thick, this is an imposing bible with considerably more presence than the smaller victorian family and devotional bibles commonly encountered.printed during the reign of king charles ii, this bible is now more than 340 years old and represents a surviving piece of 17th-century english printing and religious history.detailsdate: 1683place of printing: cambridge, england
