An evocative mid-victorian church of england devotional volume, combining the book of common prayer and new testament in a compact leather binding with an ornate brass clasp.the volume was printed in london by george e. eyre and andrew spottiswoode, printers to queen victoria, and sold by barritt & co., bible and prayer-book warehouse, fleet street.of particular interest is the handwritten presentation inscription:“lydia elizabeth lees, from her affectionate godfather, sir william smith – marriott-smith. 1850.”this dated inscription gives the volume a tangible personal history and supports an 1850 provenance/date of presentation.the exterior retains its richly embossed victorian decoration and substantial decorative metal clasp. the page edges are gilt, creating an impressive appearance when the book is closed.date: 1850 (dated presentation inscription)contents: book of common prayer & new testament
printer: george e. eyre & andrew spottiswoode

binding: embossed leather
features: decorative brass clasp, gilt page edges, 1850 presentation inscription
dimensions: approx. 11 cm high × 8 cm wide × 4 cm deepconditiona genuine antique volume showing considerable evidence of its approximately 175 years of use. the leather binding has substantial rubbing, surface loss and wear, particularly to the spine, corners and edges. the brass clasp survives and adds considerably to its character. the gilt page edges have mellowed with age. there is age-related toning and occasional marking internally.the wear has not been disguised or restored, preserving the volume’s distinctly victorian appearance. please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
