1909 Antique Holy Bible – Oxford KJV Illustrated Leather Bible with Large Brass Clasp - Ref x791

An impressive antique oxford holy bible, presented as a marriage gift in 1909, with an unusually large brass clasp, richly embossed leather binding, illustrations and biblical map.printed at the oxford university press and issued under the imprint of henry frowde, this is the king james / authorized version containing both the old and new testaments.the bible has particularly strong visual appeal. its dark leather binding is deeply embossed with decorative borders and panels, while the fore-edge is finished in red. most striking is the large brass fastening, which extends prominently across the fore-edge and gives the bible the appearance of an earlier clasp-bound family bible.inside are illustrated plates depicting biblical scenes, including moses and the tables of the law, moses striking the rock, and christ lamenting over jerusalem, together with a detailed map of canaan divided among the tribes.the front of the bible retains its original presentation label, providing a particularly attractive piece of provenance:“presented to brother john farrar by the councillors of the trinity wesleyan brotherhood as a token of their love and respect on the occasion of his marriage, december 20th, 1909.”rather than being an anonymous old bible, this inscription preserves the circumstances in which the volume was given more than a century ago — a wedding presentation from a wesleyan christian brotherhood.detailspresentation date: 20 december 1909publisher: oxford university press
