A beautiful victorian edition of john wesley’s hymns, titled a collection of hymns, for the use of the people called methodists, by the rev. john wesley, m.a., with a supplementary collection of hymns.published in london by the wesleyan conference office, this attractive methodist hymn book features an engraved portrait of john wesley opposite the title page, with his name reproduced beneath the portrait.the dark embossed binding is particularly attractive, decorated with gilt ornamental details to the front and back covers. the spine is lettered “wesley’s hymns” in gold with additional gilt decoration.inside is an extensive collection of methodist hymns arranged by subjects including prayer, repentance, faith, redemption, worship, resurrection and the work of christ.an especially useful piece of provenance is the handwritten former owner’s inscription inside the front cover, which is clearly dated 1867. this provides evidence that the book was already in use by that year, although the title page itself does not display a printed publication date.details:* john wesley* a collection of hymns for the use of the people called methodists
