The People of Israel is a national entity with various names (Hebrews, Jews), a tortuous history of more than three thousand years, a religion, a culture, a common historical memory, and diverse hopes for the future.
The Land of Israel is the accepted appellation for a territory along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, a location which may be described as the crossroads of three continents: Asia, Europe, and Africa. Its names (such as Canaan and Palestine) as well as its real and utopian borders have changed over the ages.
The State of Israel is the fifty-seven-year-old state of that ancient people, only part of which lives in the land that bears its name, together with a not inconsiderable number of other peoples.
This volume is devoted to the ages-long, ongoing, and unbroken connection of the People of Israel to its ancient homeland, the Land of Israel, from the biblical period to the first two decades of the State of Israel.
